Let’s discover a new Trading Card Game illustrated by our artist Fran P. Lobato

Our talented artist Fran P. Lobato has been commissioned to design the cards for the latest Metazoo expansion. They’ll be available first in the United States and later in several European countries.

Fran began working as an illustrator on the trading card game last November. He initially created two cards for the first expansion, then many more for the second, which is expected to be released soon… Stay tuned !

How to work with a Trading Card Game?

Last October, Fran was working on a portfolio to showcase his talents as a card game illustrator by creating characters for the mobile game Marvel Snap. His goal was to showcase his talent to companies whose universe he enjoys.

A stroke of luck came in early November: he received a message on Instagram from Shaun Kauman offering to create illustrations for a trading card game. After a few more formal email exchanges, Fran couldn’t refuse when he learned that Richard Garfield was the original designer of the game. For those who don’t know him, Richard Garfield is the creator of the Magic the Gathering trading card game. A living legend!

Let’s take a behind-the-scenes look at card creation with Fran P. Lobato.

Fran explains that he first receives a text description and references, or even model sheets created by the GameQbator Labs (GQL) team. These descriptions are very detailed, which gives him a general idea of each card they need. What he appreciates the most is the great stylistic freedom his art director, Dustin Zimmerman, gave him on this project.

The artist explains that designing a card can take him several days. The company’s creative process includes brainstorming, positioning, effects, and execution. On average, a project takes about 20 hours.

But what’s the idea behind Metazoo?

It’s impossible not to see a cryptid. Once you’ve seen one, you can see them all. And it’s usually the first one that’s the most traumatic.

Cryptids are legendary creatures or animals whose existence is suggested by eyewitnesses, but not confirmed by physical evidences. This is an opportunity to encounter Bigfoot, the Mothman, the Wendigo, and even the Grim Reaper…

Metazoo is globaly like many other trading card games: each player has a deck of cards composed by creatures, equipments, casters and auras. Here, the ultimate goal is to reach 30 Mission Points to wins the game !

To celebrate the return of the legendary Heavy Metal magazine, the publisher unveils a collection of bold creations, combining European and American influences. Founded in 1977, Heavy Metal has been a bastion of science fiction, fantasy, and graphic horror since its inception. After several decades of existence, the magazine returns with a new issue #1, published in April 2025, which aims to reassert its throne in the realm of the imaginary world. Under the editorial direction of Frank Forte, Dave Kelly, and Chris Thompson, this inaugural issue promises to be a celebration of European heritage as much as a springboard for today’s talents, like Anna Morozova.

The goal is clear: to push the boundaries of pop culture by offering uncompromising, visually spectacular, and narratively audacious stories.

An unmissable event for comic book enthusiasts

For over 50 years, the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d’Angoulême has been the unmissable event for comic book enthusiasts, professionals, and collectors. Founded in 1974, it is now one of the largest comic book festivals in the world, on par with San Diego Comic-Con and Tokyo’s Comiket. Each year, Angoulême transforms into a gigantic open-air museum, attracting hundreds of artists, publishers from around the world, and nearly 200,000 visitors who come to celebrate the ninth art in all its forms.

Much more than just a trade fair, Angoulême is a barometer of trends, a place where new talents are revealed, where the legends of comics, manga and Franco-Belgian comics are honored and where enthusiasts can admire original works and obtain autographs from their favorite artists.

Through prestigious exhibitions, conferences, book signings, and professional meetings, the festival plays a key role in the comic book industry. It has helped establish it as an art form in its own right, capable of addressing all genres and themes.

The 2025 edition celebrated Spanish comics

For this 52nd edition, the Collective comics art team was there. While admiring the masterpieces on display remains tempting… our mission goes far beyond that! We was here to meet artists, discover new talent, and forge collaborations.

From the moment we arrived, the energy of the festival swept us away. The streets vibrated to the rhythm of the monumental frescoes, the stalls overflowed with fascinating works, and the surrounding excitement testified to the undiminished passion for comics.

The 2025 edition, held from January 30 to February 2, immersed visitors in the heart of Spanish comics under the slogan “Talented Vignettes.” Supported by the Spanish government, the festival celebrated an art form in constant renewal, balancing tradition and modernity.

The Spanish Pavilion, located in the city center, offered an immersion into the landmark works of Iberian comics. But what most interested us were the privileged discussions with key figures in the world of comics such as Belén Ortega, Jorge Fornés, Alvaro Martinez Bueno, and many others. On the forecourt of the Town Hall, a captivating exhibition retraced the evolution of Spanish comics, highlighting its influences and its promising future.
The Angoulême Museum hosted “Graphic Constellation,” a vibrant exhibition dedicated to nine avant-garde Spanish female authors.
Meanwhile, the Youth Quarter invited younger visitors to discover fantastical worlds through comics such as “Hooky” by Míriam Bonastres, with the added bonus of interactive workshops and book signings.

Exhibitions, meetings and the magic of the Fauves

The Angoulême International Comics Festival (FIBD) awards ceremony has decided to award its Honorary Fauve to John Romita Jr. to celebrate the artist’s entire career!

One of the exhibitions that left the biggest impression on us was the Superman exhibition, and for good reason: the FIBD is partnering with Urban Comics and Warner Bros. to honor the first superhero.
The exhibition, installed at the Vaisseau Moebius, allows us to explore, understand, and retrace the stories of one of DC Comics‘ most iconic superheroes. Superman, the benevolent vigilante who represents the best in humanity.

The incredible scenography of this exhibition is designed by the Golem studio and offers us life-size reproductions of the emblematic locations of this universe. The immersion is fascinating and allows us to rub shoulders with the character’s emblematic locations. Whether it’s the Kent farm, the Daily Planet editorial office, Krypton or even the Fortress of Solitude, it’s all there. As you can see, this exhibition is a love letter to all the fans who have followed the adventures of this Earth vigilante.

Finally, the poster for this exhibition features the cover of one of Superman’s adventures, illustrated by Jorge Jimenez. This exhibition is on display until March 10, 2025.

For those who want to prolong the pleasure, we remind you that the character of Superman returns to the cinema on July 9, under the leadership of James Gunn, played by the young David Corenswet.

How can we not tell you about the Marvel: Superheroes and Co. exhibition?

One of the major assets of this exhibition is its diversity of original comic strip art.
This exhibition, curated by our friend Xavier Fournier, features over a hundred original comic strips, the oldest of which date back to the 1960s. These are organized by theme, promoting a total immersion in the Marvel universe. You can find original comic strips by Jack Kirby, John Romita Sr, John Byrne, Tim Sale, and even French artists Mr. Garcin and Geoffo!

What struck us when we entered a room was its dedicated universe. This exhibition plays on atmospheres, notably with the boards, but also with the furniture and the custom-made scenography. This place is a pretext to educate us on the social and political themes that run through the stories of these heroes. We remind you that our artist Kelly Williams recently illustrated many heroes from this universe and it is available here.

The other space that fascinated us was the one dedicated to the Spider-Man and his representation of a part of the suburbs of New York and its emblematic building staircases from the 1960s.

This exhibition, which will delight fans of the Marvel universe, is on display in Angoulême until May 4, 2025.

A fusion of comics, music and artistic performances

Beyond the awards, it was the festival’s unique atmosphere that made this edition memorable, with live drawing concerts where music and illustrations were created. Three performances made a lasting impression. Renowned comic book artist Jérémie Moreau drew live while the Oracle Sisters played captivating music. Writer and musician Gaël Faye told a touching story accompanied by guitarist Samuel Kamanzi, with live drawings by Sylvain Savoia. Finally, author Aude Mermilliod illustrated a scene while two jazz musicians, Vincent Peirani and Émile Parisien, improvised captivating music. All of this proves that comics are constantly evolving and can blend with music, literature, and other arts to create unique and fascinating shows!

A memorable festival

This festival reminded us that comics are an art form in their own right, deserving of support, protection, and promotion.
With Collective comics arts, we have chosen to defend the authenticity and fair compensation of artists, firmly opposing the invasion of images generated by artificial intelligence. This position resonated with many of the artists and collectors we met on site, who share our vision of a market where human creativity remains at the center of attention.

We leaved Angoulême with valuable contacts, new collaborations to come and a great motivation to continue developing Collective comics arts as a future reference platform for comic art enthusiasts and collectors !

From November 15th to 17th, we were in Monaco for the very first edition of the Monaco Comic Con. We are proud to have accompanied four of our talents for this event: Anna Morozova, Claudia Balboni, Kibar and Fran P. Lobato.

Meeting with the public

During these three days, our artists captivated visitors with their creativity and talent. They performed live personalized sketches and exclusive commissions, allowing the public to leave with unique pieces. This interaction offered a great opportunity to exchange and share around their work, whether for current projects or their published works.

Claudia Balboni, Anna Morozova, Kibar and Fran P. Lobato conquered fans with their distinctive style.

A fitting encounter

First of all, Collective comics arts didn’t come about by chance, as the concept idea was born at a comic book convention with the meeting of two enthusiasts, one in the artist alley and the other as an artist representative. After several friendly exchanges, Morvan Le Rest and Nicolas Tixador realized that their profiles complemented each other. Nicolas is the founder of the website dedicated to Batman universe and comics called Batman Legend and has been a freelance web developer for over 10 years. Morvan, meanwhile, has been an art director and freelance graphic designer for over 10 years. Alongside this work, he creates comics in his free time and participates in some fairs and conventions. It didn’t take much for them to decide to collaborate.

A harsh reality

After attending several conventions as an artist for Morvan and interviewing several illustrators for Nicolas, the reality became clear. Artists have a relentless production rhythm, yet their daily lives are challenging in many ways. They need to produce high-quality comic pages quickly. It’s important for them to be active on social media and maintain a connection with their fan base. They also have to manage their professional careers along with their private lives. It’s a tough, highly competitive field.

Collective comics arts understands what it’s like to be an artist and wishes to support this community as best as possible. We are committed to opening dialogue and understanding each individual’s ambitions in order to provide a solution tailored to their needs.

We’re more than just a platform

Our ambition is to create a professional and friendly relationship with the artists who trust us. We aim to support those who wish to work with us. However, we also have certain criteria. We seek to collaborate with active, published artists. Another essential criterion for us is the attention we dedicate to each artist. We want to help them showcase their projects as best as possible. This commitment is one of the keys to our dedication.

In addition to a platform dedicated to selling original works, we want to build connections through conventions. Our goal is to introduce our talent to events first in France, then Europe, and eventually worldwide.

Finally, for those who can’t purchase original works, we’ll soon set up the sale of prints and other merchandise!

They trust us

Today, we’re proud to have already four artists by our side to kick off this adventure (and others are coming, stay connected on Facebook or Instagram 🙂 ).

One of the first artists to join us is Fran.P Lobato, known for his Marvel fan art and his comic Dreambreaker, released in 2021.

The second artist to join our dynamic team is Anna Morozova, primarily known for her work with the publishing house 2000AD and, more recently, for Dynamite on the title Barbarella.

The artist Kelly Williams has also joined us, having worked on numerous horror comics, as well as comics for the WWE and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Finally, we have the honor of welcoming Claudia Balboni to our team. She’s an illustrator working on numerous licenses, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Star Trek, Ghostbusters, and many others !

We’re proud and thrilled to begin this journey with such talented individuals and hope you find something to “dazzle your eyes”!
